Water and Coastal Resources at the U.S. Agency for International Development

Sustainable development depends on clean, abundant, and affordable water. The U.S. Agency for International Development’s (USAID) strategic goals — promoting economic and agricultural development, protecting human health, preventing conflict, and safeguarding the environment — require better management of the world’s water resources than has occurred in the past.

Because water is fundamental to economic and social progress and critical to the health of the world’s ecosystems, USAID has always worked in the water sector, and it has improved the lives of thousands worldwide through its water-related investments. USAID’s Water Team was formed to promote Integrated Water Resources Management and support environmentally sound, cross-sectoral, and participatory approaches to managing and conserving freshwater and coastal resources, and to using them in a sustainable manner.
